The Contemporary Definition of Cheap Motoring

The definition of cheap motoring has changed significantly over the years. Twenty or thirty years ago the term signified someone buying as cheap a car as possible and usually running it until it fell apart.

Nowadays the term signifies something subtly different as it brings in other elements. We are much more aware of the environment now, so our efforts to cut costs are combined with our efforts to save fuel and the planet!

We are now much more likely to balance the purchase price of the car against other factors such as the fuel consumption. With the rising price of fuel this is both an economical and an ecological factor. And with rising and often astronomical insurance costs, this also comes into the equation of cheap motoring, as the cheapest car might be the most expensive to insure.

The old flamboyant and showy cars of the seventies have been replaced by efficient and easy to park small cars. They are far more sensible than the sorts of gas guzzlers we used to choose as our priorities have changed so dramatically.

In short, our motoring is slowly turning into something that gets us from A to B quickly, efficiently and without costing too much money, whereas our priorities used to be flashy and hip cars. A good thing of course, but I cannot help feeling that cars were so much cooler thirty years ago.
